The company
Milk Moovement is dedicated to improving efficiency across the dairy supply chain, working with co-ops across North America to ensure the smooth movement of raw milk from farms to processors. Their tools enable drivers to collect data during milk pickups, including location details that support payments and optimize accounting throughout the supply chain. By leveraging location technology, Milk Moovement helps customers make informed decisions and streamline their operations with accurate, real-time data.
The challenge
Location is at the core of Milk Moovement's business. Accurate routing can lead to lower fuel costs, on-time deliveries, and increased customer satisfaction and revenue.
As their customer base grew, it became increasingly difficult for Milk Moovement’s legacy system to handle the volume of location updates. Thousands of drivers traveling between farms and co-ops everyday (often in areas with no cell service) created a lack of complete visibility into end-to-end routes. This resulted in missed data points from dead zones, inefficient caching of location updates, and data storage problems.
To meet customer expectations for timely milk collection and accurate driver compensation, Milk Moovement required reliable replay functionality and a scalable location solution. Milk Moovement considered multiple providers, including AWS and Bluedot, but Radar stood out for several reasons: AWS was 30% more expensive, and Bluedot lacked the necessary completeness for their immediate and long-term needs, such as handling ETAs.
The solution
Milk Moovement uses Radar's Trips to identify drivers' pickup and delivery locations, with custom events generated through geofence entries and exits. By triggering webhooks to backend systems based on exit event durations (like loading and unloading times), Milk Moovement has complete data visibility into every route, and can share detailed replays with customers.
With the Radar SDK, Milk Moovement can track drivers accurately and reliably (even if they close out of the mobile app) as they arrive at farms and processing plants. Geofences trigger alerts and measure dwell times, providing Milk Moovement with insights to assess on-site delays for their customers, improve data accuracy, and reduce compliance gaps.
The results
Radar's polygon geofences and trip tracking with live ETAs increased the percentage of routes completed to 99%, and built confidence in the accuracy of location data across their operations. With user-friendly dashboards and a reliable SDK, the Milk Moovement team claim Radar’s tools are more accurate than anything they’ve ever had. The impact of improved accuracy is also evident in internal team bandwidth, amounting to an estimated $200,000 in annual savings. With less engineering time maintaining Milk Movement's legacy solution, the team now saves five days per month on system maintenance, freeing them to focus on more strategic initiatives, completed trip improvements, and higher-value tasks.
What's next
Milk Moovement is looking to further optimize its operations by using Radar's data for smarter scheduling and route optimization.
